Interoperability in healthcare is becoming increasingly important due to digitalization and the new normal. Medical device manufacturers face the challenge of integrating their devices into clinical IT systems and supporting data exchange. Connecting medical devices to the master data systems of a HIS (Hospital Information System) and ensuring communication between them is now essential for remaining competitive. Internationally, the HL7® standard is the go-to solution. A HL7® interface must be provided for the medical device that enables bidirectional communication: This allows patient master data to be received from the HIS, and test results to be sent directly to the device as well as back to the digital patient record.
Getting started with HL7® und and setting up the connection at the customer’s hospital site usually proves to be a complex process. To make this process as simple as possible, we have developed 7connect.
7connect is a software component developed by softgate for integrating medical devices into clinical IT systems via HL7®. The component facilitates the exchange of patient master data as well as the data collected by your medical device. This allows medical device manufacturers to remain focused on their core expertise while taking advantage of 7connect.
Among other things, 7connect can be used to implement the typical clinical data acquisition workflow:
- Receipt of clinical orders (Order Management – ORM)
- Receipt of updates to patient and case data (Admission, Dismissal, Transfer – ADT)
- Sending coded, machine-readable test results (Observation Result Unsolicited—ORU)
- Sending documents (Medical Document Management—MDM)

Directly in the device: 7connect is integrated into your device´s software. The high-Level interface enables easy intergration.
Virtually on the server: With this option, the interface is installed on a virtual machine at the hospital. Our Connectivity Gateway provides an ideal foundation for this type of server installation. The connection is etsablished via the network. The medical device software remains unaffected.
